Ladies do you know how to avoid getting distracted by guys?

Dear Pastor (Barr.) Temilolu,
I have been privileged to read your article published in the Punch. I gained wisdom and insight even though I am a man. May God strengthen you more. Thanks.
Bright Uzoma
Dear Aunty Temilolu,
I am 17 while my boyfriend is 24. He finished from the Polytechnic Ibadan and now he is undergoing his Industrial Training. We both love each other so much. However, I’m scared we’ll fall apart soon because I am going to study medicine & surgery which is going to take me 12-13 years. He never disapproved it but I’m scared he might dump me. Please advise me on what to do. I’m worried.
Aramide
My darling, precious, glorious, dignified, world-famous and heavenly celebrated Nigerian sisters,
Concentrate on getting good grades rather than falling in Love
“Education is the Best Friend. An Educated Person is Respected Everywhere. Education Beats the Beauty and the Youth.” – Chanakya
I am forced to wonder what value Aramide’s parents place on education and their general attitude towards her aspirations and intellectual pursuits. Usually, parents who place a high premium on education bombard their children with books in their impressionable years and already give them an idea of what they want them to be in future, career wise. They ensure their kids have extra coaching classes and do everything they can for their kids to have qualitative education. By their early teens, these kids are already sure of the profession they would pursue and not only dream about it but study hard to acquire the required grades which would qualify them to study that course in the university. Such kids do not like to disappoint their parents because the wish of their parents has grown with them and become a part of them. I doubt Aramide is one of such kids because even though love has a very powerful force that can make anyone lose their heads sometimes, what is ingrained in a child is difficult to dismantle.
Girls…why in the world would you ever consider putting your boyfriend before your life-long dreams and aspiration which in fact could be what God has designed to make you shine in life and celebrated in the world? That is what Aramide is doing. Take it or leave it, no man or boy is worth compromising your aspirations for. What makes Aramide think her boyfriend doesn’t have another girl he’ll do anything for? What makes her think he has long term plans for her? And how is Aramide so sure she’ll still fancy him in the next six months? This is because she’s still very young and bound to come across so many guys who would probably have better qualities and even encourage her in her academics. She’s bound to meet several good guys while in medical school who would fit into the bill of her perfect man. 17 is definitely too young an age to start thinking of settling down in marriage with a guy. You are short-changing yourself and your beautiful future. That’s why I never encourage 17-year-olds to have a boyfriend, believe me; you are still at an age when you have very high tendencies of thinking and acting stupid. That age should be spent settling down in the university and working hard to have the best grades. What you do in your first and second year matters a lot and determines your GPA throughout your stay in the university.
Unfortunately, we are in a mediocre society where very little value is placed on education. I read about Mr. Ayodele Dada who made history by being the first graduate of University of Lagos to make the maximum cumulative grade point average (CPGA) of 5.00 point out of 5.00.  It’s a rarity anywhere in the world. No matter what anyone thinks, he ought to be celebrated not only by the media but by the Federal Government in such a big way just to encourage Nigerian youth to take education seriously. However, sadly, he got less than a tenth of the attention Olajumoke the bread-seller turned model got save for an invitation by the Federal House of Representatives. Yet you’ll find a state governor rewarding hip-hop artistes who probably didn’t see the four walls of a university with luxury cars and even attending the naming ceremonies of their babies born out of wedlock.
Being intelligent is one of the most desirable qualities in a person. It trumps your looks, wealth, or age. Reading, learning, and a thirst for knowledge all lead you to become educated. Education is a universal currency and is respected in all corners of the world. Long after you grow up and your youthful looks leave you, you will always have your education.
To be continued.
