In a shocking incident, a 17-year old female, S. Anitha, who belonged to SC category, has finished her life in Ariyalur region on September 01.
The intelligent girl had attained 1,176/1,200 marks in 12th State Board exams but was not capable of becoming part of MBBS because of less marks in NEET. This made her finish her life on Friday.
Anitha, who is the daughter of a laborer, belonged to Kuzhumur village by Sendurai here, had impleaded herself as one of the responders in a SC case challenging NEET.
Her demise activated sturdy responses from politicians and social protesters who had been in quest of exception for the State from the entrance test, NEET. Expressing grief on her demise, CM Edappadi K. Palaniswami has given a compensation of ₹7 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Relief support to her family member and a government job offer to one of the member of her family.
If medical admissions had been held on the basis of Plus Two scores as was in vogue for the past decade, Anitha, having attained perfect scores in Physics, 199 in the subject of Chemistry and 194 in the subject of Biology (she also got centum in Mathematics), would have secured a cut-off of 196.75/200.
The girl had a good opportunity of bagging medical seat
Taking into consideration that the MBBS cut-off for SC applicants in 2016 was just 191.25, the girl would have, in all likelihood, pocketed a seat in a preferred Government medical college.
But, as medical admissions were carried out only on the basis of NEET marks, she did not meet the criteria, as she had got just 86 score out of 720 in the examination.
When the girl had gone to the national capital to implead herself as a responder in the NEET case in SC, she had told reporters, “I want to be a doctor and I will be assured of a seat if the admission is based on Plus Two marks.”
Family grieves
“Her dream had crumbled and Anitha took the extreme step dejected over failing to secure a medical seat because of NEET. Her father and brothers supported the girl to the hilt to realise her ambition, but everything has gone waste,” stated a sobbing S. Bhuvaneswari, the girl’s niece, also living at Kuzhumur village.
Anitha lost her mom early and her father could not have enough money to pay for special coaching for her to prepare for NEET.
According to the girl’s family, she hung herself inside her house apparently making use of a saree. The girl’s dad and grandma were away when she took the shocking step.
